There are many Japanese tourists in NYC.
Japanese tourists have become robbery targets for the criminal youth.
My advice for Japanese tourists in NYC is to stay in Manhattan.
Don't go to Brooklyn, even Williamsburg.
You will not get robbed in Williamsburg, but you may get robbed
on the L Train on the way there.

Sheesh, everything will become a social problem sooner or later. That's not just a Japanese thing, though.
The U.S. media likes making big, sensationalist deals out of things, too. I remember a few years ago was the "summer of the shark,"
where a couple of shark encounters got everyone whipped up into a frenzy. After that, it was the "summer of abducted children," and now pedophiles are the big deal of the moment.

Wait, instead of "pedophiles," make that "child predators," especially Internet ones.

If I could find them - and find them with subtitles so I can keep
up with what people are saying - I'd gladly watch them.

I'm a 馬鹿外人 American, though, and can't really speak Japanese
at all (other than, say, すみません, ごめんなさい, わかりません,

There are many Japanese video clips with Japanese subtitles on youtube, though.
(mainly variety shows)
If you mean English subtitles, well, no, I don't think there are many of such
kind of video clips.

Interesting. Now that many commedians from kansai appear on TV,

No, I mean Japanese subtitles. I can read Japanese much better than
I can speak or listen to it.

Music videos are one of the best ways I've found to learn - they
usually have subtitles, and they're catchy so they stick in my
head. It's usually pretty easy to find English translations, too.

Oh, Ok. I found a video clip in which Kansai-ben speakers appear.
Though Not all statements are subbed, but the creators of the show
put some subtitles to emphasize what's spoken between the commedians -
laughing points.

Yeah, we can always start over our life from today, or tomorrow. Get a job
or get any of those qualifications and study or work
for our children's sake!!! (I mean our children in the future)lolz~~

But if you would suffer from depression, cure the illness first!

I have same problem, though it is not as serious as yours. I've been bullied
by classmates because of my weakness of mind, I guesss. (;_;) But these days,
I try not to care about them so much. The girl (ijimekko) seems she has a problem

Concering Abe, as I'm sure I said, his policy is still out of focus, IMO.

Kouki, yeah, I am not a typical ijimerarekko type of a girl, I am cheerful,
not gloomy, I smile and laugh a lot. I guess....X.X

But the other day, I've learned that Natalie Portman was also
bullied hard when she was little. (Maybe after she gained her reputation
by the movie, "Leon" her classmates started to bully her). She's gone
through a hard life. So after I get over this torture? I'll be grown
than before? maybe...I believe so. And recently I think it is not good to
stay as a victim, it seems pathetic. I gotta take out my revenge!!!
.....do you think it is better to revenge them??? @.@....lolz~~

97 :Kouki:2006/09/23(土) 14:49:16

What a coincidence! I happened to watch Leon the other day - the scene
where Natalie takes Leno's gun and shoots haphazardly and randomly into the air outside the window.
Apart from that, I think you stand out a little, like it or not, since
you are a returnee (if I rememer right). The bullying girl can't get
her eyes from you maybe because of that. Hmm, about retaliation thing,
I'm not sure whether it is the best solution... You can't put some
distance from her?

lolz~~ oh ok ifyou want to know more about her....X.X

ummm...she was very quiet girl in the beginning.
She rarely talks. I thought she was mild, hard worker, innocent
type of a girl. But then she's changed after around May or she's
just betrayed her real nature. Now she is so powerful and talks a lot.
She outspeaks a lot. It is really surprising for all of us. So my friens
all say "Oh we've never imagined her real character."

So be careful! pretentious cutie girls are scary!!! >.<

If you feel like some drinks, you better get green tea or coffee
instead of coke. If you really need coke, diet coke would be
much better.(But diet coke tastes a bit worse than the sugar-added
type though) Drinking too much coke may cause diabetes, and you
have a higher risk of getting so-called Metabolic Sydrome, which
people are talking about nowadays. even if you are young, you can't
be too careful. I took a blood test recently and found the blood suger
level reached almost 110mg/dl. This is the phase of pre-diabetes.
I wasn't particularly fat then. Diabetes is a very dangerous disease
because it causes kidney dysfunction, cataract, gangrene in the feet,
heart attack, and many many more.

Yeah, diabetes sounds very depressing. Funny thing is though, I know one
person who is diatetic and carries with him KitKat, I suppose, to maintain his bloodsugar
level, and the other person who carries with her Diet Coke also to maintain
bloodsugar leve.

in the medical dept. (equivalent to med school in the US),
u have no specific major. u have to study all the fields of
medicine and prepare for all the tests in all the subjects.
say, from biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology, anatomy
to internal medicine, surgery, anesthesia, dermatology, ophthalmology,
obstrics and gynecology, psychiatry and etc.
i counted how many subjects i had to study and found that was more
than sixty. one doctor has all kinds of knowledge in medicine.
u have to learn them all in just 6 years.

Hi! I am fine now! sorry to make some of your worried.
I was horribly in panic last night...but I'm ok now! ^^

I went to school today but I was safe...I mean, some of my good friends
protected me from the ijimekko...since I looked abonormally pale this morning and
frightened, some of my friends asked me "what's wrong with you" I said
blabla....then they stood up for me. They protected me. So those ijimekko
coudn't come to me. v(^^)v

Tetoris game continues forever....if you are good lol

I heard that Tetris was invented in the former Soviet Union.
But is it played globally?

Yes. It is such a simple and ultimate never ending masterpiece.lol

Does it do any good to your brain?

Maybe a little. Maybe our reflex nerve would improve a little if
we practice a lot of times...not sure about that though...

So called 'Aha' experience is said to be good
for your brain these days.
but that has nothing to do with tne Norwegian band.....

huh? Aha experience? I don't know what it is...

Well...I don't do Tetoris all the time, 24 hrs. If only 5 minutes a day
and I wonder if it makes your brain improved? not sure about that...but if you would
continue something everyday, (like sit ups 100 times a day) you might have
some kind of advantageous effect one day...well as long as it is not a drug abuse or something....
or sometimes disadvantageous effect. How about internet? I've been doing this
for two years everyday. Is there any good effect for you?

The 'Aha' experience is what you get when, for example, your
Tetris piece fits perfectly into the intended shape.
Then some positive substance gets produced in the brain to make you keep going.

Internet, on the other hand, I'm not sure....
but if you are dying to know something, you google it,
and finally find it... then I'd assume you will get the 'Aha' experience as well.

So the "Aha" exeprience is the moment satisfaction only? which lasts
less than 3 minutes, isn't it? lol It is good to get positive sustances
all the time, But I hope I could get more sense of fulfillment which
lasts long.

But maybe we can't expect too much for the things like that.
I think "little happiness"=aha experience? If you accumulate many of those,
you feel happy for end of the day. (damn something wrong with this pc!!!...there is always
the the sand clock....)

"Sanchan" is bullied and virgin.

What do NEET people enjoy most?
I'm sure it depends on the individuals, but
I might as well ask.....

in my case,i enjoy playing video games and watching DVD-movies 14hours a day.
i really enjoy every moment

of course i can only speak for myself but i enjoy browsing the internet,
reading interesting things, playing games or watching anime; from time
to time i enjoy learning new things, programming languages for example,
but i am not a patient person, so i don't spend much time doing things
others would consider useful.

Yea, we have differet accents such as Kansai, Tohoku(e.g. Aomori), Kagoshima to name a few.
I really wonder how they sound to non-japanese people's ears who can understand standard Japanese.
Because we are surrounded by American English in Japan, therefore
we need to make extra efforts to get used to the British accent.
But you are absolutely right, in that English was originated in England so their sound is more
authentic.
Just like we don't have 'California Roll (with Acocado)' in our version of SUSHI.

Members of the leading party decide their leader and he/she will automatically becomes
the Prime Minister.
You could say people's voices have been reflected because the voices (votes) made the LDP
the leading party, but we feel that we are sort of isolated from the political game the
politicians are playing.

Just so you know, soybean isoflavone or hemale hormone estrogen have
nothing to do with male-shiomneta talks.

Don't know what you're saying.

haha female estrogen sounds like more medical term. In a way, it sounds like
shimoneta hahaha

Female estrogen eases the perimenopausal symptoms. If you are a woman,
you will understand it sooner or later.

Is it ture that lack of female hormone could be one cause of baldness?
That's why there are more bald men than bald women?

471 :merkin ◆BeSm0ofY92 :2006/09/26(火) 16:58:49

American English sounds like English English from around 1600-1700,
although it has heavy Irish/Scot influences.

I had my first Japanese class today; there are a fair number of students of
Japanese descent there, from several of the names I heard. Lots of
Koreans, too.

how come did you decide to take a japanese class?

473 :keira:2006/09/26(火) 18:45:53
>>471
Your first class? Ah man, I remember those days. n 3n
Japanese is usually a fun class! The only thing that sucks about Japanese 1 and 2 is that there will be a lot of Otakus...unless you like Otakus of course. Haha. xD

How old are you Merkin?

What kind of Otakus are they?
The computer nerds or Jap-amination nerds?

It's too braod, and people are perplexed.
I hope he will start talking more specifically.

Do you have the 'Year 2007 problem' is the US or other contries?
In Japan, age of retirement is usually 60 years old, and those babyboomers
start to retire in 2007.
Since those peopel are very large in number and very skilled,
Japan is in a hurry to foster and hire younger generation to compensate.

Ditto.
Koizumi was similar in a way.
He was called 'Sound-bite' Prim Minister.
In other words, his words were short and easy for everyone to understand
(that's why he was very popoular among general public)
but no real substance.

But for Koizumi-san, I feel the short and understandable slogan fits
him and ppl have good impression for him while Abe looks out focused...

You are right. Abe-san did not really say anything during the
election campaign. I think that is because he was leading by such a
large margin and he didn't want to make any mistakes which may have changed the
situation.
Funny thing is that another candidate Aso (now appointed again the foreign
minister) gain the largest number of pupularity votes on the Internet survey.
He has a big support from the Akiba-tribes (=Akihabara Otakus)^^

the taste and texture of beefs from the 2 countries are very different.

Not really, just a few words aurally - I don't know any kanji.
I started with learning kana, but then I got too busy with school. My boyfriend's
going to lend me a book that claims to be able to teach one all the kana symbols
in a very short time, so that should be better, as I'm busy a lot nowadays.
Not that it should take a long time even without it. I probably would have
known it backwards and forwards by now had I actually kept it up. Memorizing as
simple symbols as those never posed much problem for me in the past. I imagine
it will take a great deal more effort to learn to write them so that they
actually look good, than to memorize them.

Jealousy is the feeling one gets when one feels one has been deprived

I don't think that she should belong to me, nor that some part of her looks
were stolen from me. She looks good by herself, not because she took

what do you do usually at the work??

lifting heavy loads and haul them into trucks for shipping!
Those kinds of jobs are not necessarily to use English!
And there is not any chance to encounter my angel Emma at all!
I just want to work at Mitsubishi shoji or Mitsui Bussan in United Kingdom.

Watching ( and kissing) Emma's smile on the poster in my room is the only way for me to reduce my stress and fatigue.
Some people say she is not so pretty. but i cant understand them.

Do you know this phrase ?
"baka aho tindonya omaeno kaachan debeso"
most of the children would often say this phrase when I was a kid.

Yeah. Some ppl used to say as a curse words when somebody piss him off haha

but so old saying.

Chindonya=Japanese group of traditional street performers
with bright-colored clothes and makeup. So old ppl used to think
these ppl with bright make ups look stupid and then it is considered
bad...I guess. ^^;

I'm listening to Sting's new album~~!
He is singing songs (sounds like church music) from the 16-17th centuries,
and the only musical instrument used is lude, totally accoustic.
Very different from the Police era, but if you like to feel his quiet side,
I highly recommend this album~~

Just few hours ago, I saw the Ijimekko girl's little sis around my house.O_O"
She was there yesterday hanging around my house and guess what? She was wearing
a disguise. (a cap and sunglasses lol)....What the heck she wants? Is that some kind of the threats??
When I saw her face, I knew it was her little sis immediately. She has a very round face
and round nose. So even she disguised, everybody can recognize her face. haha

I really don't know what they want from me....gahhhhh....

But she's threaten me that in a week they'd attack me again. But tomorrow is
the last day of the week. I hope they won't do anything to me anymore...
They are really fool and disgusting people....>,<
Sorry...just pour our my thoughts....

698 : ◆Hell/6W/Cs :2006/09/28(木) 18:24:18

Fight with her

you should show ijimekko your strong power

ijimekko thinks you as weak person

school girl-san,
my advice would be:
1. Call 110(>>698)
2. Try not to pay attention to them.
3. Do you know the saying "Derukui-wa utareru? (Stand out from the crowd and you just invite trouble for yourself?"
But I think, if you stand out too far from their reach, they will give up on you.
So, cultivate what you are good at and excell everyone else!!
Go for it!

701 :school girl ◆lk0KbeC12s :2006/09/28(木) 19:23:12
Thanks!!! for your advice!^^

OK! I'll take >>700's advice.

>>698
Yes, you are right. If the things get worse, I will call 110.
But you know we are still children. I don't know if police would
take it seriously....(^^:

>>699
Well, I would like to try once....but I better not. You know?
I really don't care how they think about me. Maybe they think
I am weak...but you know what "a weaker dog gives a bark
more than a stronger dog". that is....To keep silence shows that
I am stronger than them. and stronger or not is not very important.
I am much smarter and more mature than them. They are just
disgusting people who always want know who has more power...in this small society...lolz~~

>>700
Thanks. #2 totally. #3totally haha that's exactly true. If I would stand out
too far, they won't reach me. Yes, I willl study hard and be more attractive in the future.
That is how I can beat them. Thanks for your adviceee!!!!

*lots of huggles and kisses to you!!!* (^^)/

ah also...let me just add some more..

In the school, I told my friends, (there are some good friends, boys and girls
who have very good grades and have leaderships) they really do
support me nowadays. ^^ One of those firends have already informed the teacher
what is going on in the class...so if something happened tomorrow,
they would know it immediately. ^^ Ijimekkos get in trouble. So I don't know
what they are thinking...but many ppl are protecting me...(^^)
It's good to have good friends in school...I used to shut myself to others
but I'm changing now! lol ^^

706 :Agent Smith:2006/09/28(木) 19:58:41
Why, Mr. Anderson? Why, why, why?

Why do you do it? Why? Why get up? Why do you keep fighting?

Do you believe you are fighting for something? For more than your
survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know?

Is it freedom or truth? Perhaps peace? Could it be for love?

Illusions, Mr. Anderson, variations of perception! Temporary
constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify
an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as
artifical as the Matrix itself! Although, only a human mind could
invent something as insipid as love.

You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now,
you can't win. It's pointless to keep fighting.

Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?

Ah. I usually refrain from immediately going back to sleep after nightmares
due to having a lot of experience with just starting new nightmares if I

Ah, I'll watch it at the next opportunity I get.
The languages I switch between usually are Swedish and English,
at one point I've even done this to the degree that I really did not
notice switching language mid-sentence or perhaps even mid-word. That
was when I was younger, though. Around the age of 16-18.
But as my siblings and I have access to many languages (all of us know Swedish,
English and some Hungerian, two of us studied German and the third has a basich
understandment of it, two of us studied French to different degrees and
the other one understands a little, one Spanish and we others understand
a little of it, we know random words in many other languages, and my sisters
have picked up words and phrases in Japanese and Korean from the various
drama series they've watched, and they're trying to learn some... Mandarin,
I think? from the drama series they watch... They probably also have picked
up some words here and there from the Bollywood movies they watch),
things can get rather... interesting.
Though we haven't had a conversation where we've mixed more than three
languages at a time for a year or three.
I usually stick to a single language if I speak in Swedish or English
nowadays, though. But I have an unfortunate habit of accidentally code-switching
if I am having several conversations at once over instant messenger in
different languages (i.e. Swedish and English).

I guess Swidish and English must have a lot of commonalities, much so than between English and Japanese,
which, I think makes the unconscious code-switching possible. (I may be totally worn^^;)

a lot more in common than Japanese and English.
Korean and Japanese? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_language hmm..
I'll take your word for it ^-^
I think the reason for why I have such an easy time switching between

studied it in school from 4th to 12th grade.

>>808
Hmm... I've never seen code-switching as an asset, though. I've always
seen it as a weakness in myself, because I enjoy reading and hearing
languages being used fluently by themselves, in spite of that virtually
all natural languages alive today all have influences and words from other
languages, and thus mixing already mixed languages aren't really bad.
It just feels strange for me to deviate from the standard version of a
language, in whatever group I'm in.
They mentioned similarities in that Japanese language classification

further back one went, the less the languages have in common, though,

I feel the similar arrogance about Americans as well
when I see Hollywood movies for instance.

spoke with Japanese accents.

853 :k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2006/09/29(金) 20:00:36
>>850
I was under the impression that they weren't really trying to be accurate
about the story... The movie was based on a book that wasn't accurate
from the start (according to the Geisha who told the author about her life,
and then published her own memoirs as a response to how he had "twisted"
her words). I've read both books (translated to Swedish), and I can't
but help preferring the latter book, as the writing feels less fictional, somehow.
But yes... My impression was that they were just trying to convey a modern
asian-flavoured action-like movie with some historical flavour, based in
an exotic setting. If you want accuracy, then the last thing you should
watch is that movie. However, hopefully it has increased the global
interest in geishas, and inspired people to find out about what they
really are like, as I would find it too sad if the profession went extinct.
I think they used English with Japanese accents to make the US audience
feel less alienated, so that they'd focus more on the story, rather than
feel distanciated from it. I would have preferred to have it in Japanese,
but with subtitles. I however, unlike the vast majority of the US population,
have been used to seeing movies in their original language + subtitles
since I was a small child, as that's the standard way of dealing with
foreign movies/series in Sweden that aren't aimed at small children.
People who aren't used to this often feel a sort of distanciation from
the content that is being conveyed to the, as they feel it's an effort
to actually read subtitles, while as I do it without realizing it half
the time.
I've seen examples where accents have been brilliantly used as a
replacement for different languages, though.
The old tv-series 'Allo Allo is a wonderful example of that...

That is indeed their problem, yes. I was under the impression the movie was
targetted mainly at an american audience, and so to increase the profit
I can see why they did that, even though I personally would have preferred
a Japanese movie about such a Japanese topic. However, it was an American
movie, a Hollywood movie even, so I really wouldn't expect much from
something that's obviously going to be as un-authentic as that...
Hollywood has a reputation for being very un-authentic...
It is indeed a pity that more authentic things aren't appriciated, but
I think it may stem partially from that there are cultural differences.
So while something may be more authentic, people would fail to undestand
it properly, and that is why adaptations are so appriciated. Because
it makes the subject a lot more understandable and likable for the
one not used to whatever culture it originally came from.

There is one other Hollywood absurdity I've noticed.
In historical films, they seem to make the American acters speak
with British accent, but the actors usually end up with a queer accent
somewhere between American and British.

I can watch movies and series in English without a problem.
I usually wind up missing the subtitles though, as subtitles
ensure that you don't miss any vital information thanks to
that the actor has slurred speech, noisy surroundings or
because you have to have the volume down low in order to
disturb people as little as possible during the evening.
For someone who multitasks too much, that's insanely handy.

>>860
Hehh... ^-^ I'm lucky, unless their accent's too weird I usually
can ignore the oddity of that. The transatlantic accent is a
very common and highly recommended accent though, are you sure
this isn't what you're talking about? I've heard plenty of actors
trying to speak in an certain accent yet failing too noticably,
however there are also plenty of actors who deliberately speak
with a transatlantic accent, which is a mix of US-English and
England-English with very specific rules and pronounciation
ways.

ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Base, and many others.
In Japan, Sweden is known as a country that produces good metal music.
Beginning from Yngwy Malmsteen, there are plenty of artists.

feeling which reminds them of Enka.

I like 渋谷系, myself. I have way too many Pizzicato Five mp3s.
Also, 951 get!

have you ever tried chiropractic?

Pizzicato Five is cool, but we don't hear about them very often these days.........

954 :merkin ◆BeSm0ofY92 :2006/09/30(土) 06:02:51
>>953
That's because they broke up in 2002. Both Konishi and Maki have
kept a low profile since then; Maki had a song in みんな大好き塊魂,
and Konishi produced some songs for people, but that's all I've
heard of them doing.

no, i haven't. i don't want to trouble you, but if you're going to
visit a chiropractor, you should be careful about what he does because
chiropractic can be pretty dangerous to the patient.
manipulating the cervical spine for example, increases the risk of
suffering an apoplectic stroke, he should inform you of any risks
before the actual treatment; if he doesn't be sure to ask what exactly
he is doing.

>>954
Oh, they broke up? No wonder.
As well as their music, I like the way Maki dresses and I kinda like
the way Konishi looks.
If I had a next life, I would like to be engaged in something as creative
as Pizzicato 5.

>>955
Thanx a lot for your advice^~
actually I was thinking about recommending it to my parents, but maybe
I shouldn't. I didn't know any possible link between chiro. and apoplectic strokes (to tell you the truth,
I had to look up in the dictionary for the meaning of this word, LOLz!!)

>>955
I'd assume there have been law suits against chiropractors in your country?

>>950
You, make new thread! Congratz wwww

i don't remember any major lawsuits, but it is mandatory to inform
the patient about a potentially risky treatment.

if the chiropractor knows what he's doing there shouldn't be much of
a problem but since manipulations on the spine tend to be pretty
dangerous in general, some physicians disadvise from manual treatment,
at least on the fragile cervical spine.

i don't want to discourage anyone from visiting a chiropractor, but
have him inform you thoroughly about what exactly he's going to do
and about possible consequences of the treatment.

>>960
thanx a lot for your very kind advice~~

Is it true that people outside japan don't care, or don't even know their blood type?
'cause in japan, everyone knows his/her blood type, and they are even used to
classify personalities.

I can't speak for any other country, but this is true in the
U.S.. There isn't any relevance given to anyone's blood type
other than practical medical knowledge. I happen to know
mine since I gave blood on a semi-regular basis at one time.
I'm Type O, the universal donor.

>>977
Here is japanese way of rough categorization of personalities based on the blood type:
type-A: precise and squre, attentive
type-B: always keeps one's own pace, stuborn
type-O: lively, doesn't care about details
type-AB: rational, sensitive

......and I'm type O, too. Most generous blood type,LOLz!

I concur with >>977 - the blood type personality thing is mostly limited to
Japan. As it happens, I'm also type O - but type O is the most common
blood type in the US.

I don't know my blood type, sadly. In most of the western world
(as far as I know), the only reason for knowing your bloodtype
would be if you're getting a blood transfusion, or an organ transplant
or similar.

>>978
Keep in mind that blood isn't just AA, BB, or 00 or AB...
the Rhesus factor matters too, as well, as other things.
No offense, but the blood-type horoscope style way of generalizing
people is way too.. It's overgeneralization to the point of ridiculous
vagueness, and and downright unusuable. I've known people who even were
closer to the exact opposite of their bloodtype stereotypes (I know my parents
bloodtypes, for instance)...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_type Read, be educated.
