Denmark is a rather nice place to visit, but I'd hate living there.
Not really that much different, especially as I live slightly more
than 30 minutes away from denmark by train, over the Öresunds-bridge.

I can't really state in what ways Denmark is different, as I've
never really given it much attention. There's a lot more public
rasism there - that's one of the more important things I can state.

Hi! Nice to meet you too. You're majoring in medicine?
I'm sorry if I've used too many slang expressions before...
I try to refrain from doing so...
English is my second language, and sadly I'm not as good at it
as what I wish I was.

"I am a university student major in medical" I think that's supposed
to be "I am a university student majoring in medicine", but I'm not certain.

>>73
No, your English is great. However...
"I'm sorry if I've used"->"I'm sorry if I used"
"I try to refrain"->"I'll try to refrain" (since it's in future)

You could also say "I'm a major in medicine." (if it's already
established that you're a university student).

75 :gaijin:2006/07/17(月) 20:34:56

Thanks, I missed that one. Maybe I should try to multitask less
when I'm chatting here.

>>71 Non-nordic people, essentially. Rasism makes me feel worried,
the same way hatred towards any too big and too generic group does.
Makes me worried when people sink so low that they resort to making
themselves blind, and cling on to too strict preconceived ideas,
not being willing to see the people as persons. Like "All people of
religion/skincolor/gender/etc X need to die! I'd love to make them suffer!"
This in spite of that the people in that group may have very little
in common except for one or two things. If we use Christianity as
example: there are many branches of that religion, some are directly
contradictory to eachother. The only things they have in common are
two books. Within that you have everything from the extreme fundamentalists
(some kinds being based on pure hatred), to modern, easy-going people who
want to make the world better by help, understandment and compassion.
Too often, too large groups are spoken of as homogeneous, in spite
of that they're heterogeneous people with a few things in common.
Naturally, statistically there are some sub-properties that a larger
part of the group has, but it nevertheless is merely percentage,
not something people are guaranteed to have at all.
In other words: too broad generalizations spoken as if they were
universal truths, especially when they're negative, worry me greatly.

77 :k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2006/07/17(月) 20:46:14
>>74
>"I try to refrain"->"I'll try to refrain" (since it's in future)

Actually, that's not in future tense, that's as a habit.
Which should make it "I try to refrain", the same way "I play tennis"
is something someone who habitually plays tennis would say. Isn't
that so? O.o
I generally try to refrain from using too much slang and too sloppy
expressions on this board.I always have, and I always will.

Oh. I just made the assumption that you were saying you would do
it from now on. If it's something you've always been doing, then
that way is correct. However, I assumed that was not the intended
meaning since you had just before said that you had used too many
slang expressions, which I had attributed to you lacking the
intention to not do so rather than forgetting to not do so or
whatever it was that caused you to do so.

ugh religion...

I was raised a catholic, and was forced to go to church every week.
Once I was old enough to think for myself, my entire belief came crashing down
as I realized the huge sham that it was.

I view religions as cults now, and I feel sorry for those who depend
on a god to give their life meaning. I obviously can't see eye to eye
on this issue with my family, so that distances me from them somewhat.

82 :k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2006/07/17(月) 21:01:19
>>79
I do use some slang expressions that I'm fond of, but I try to not use
slang in excess. My success-rate depends on how focused I am, as well
as what I'm writing. I'm also prone to mess up with sentence structures,
using a part of a sentence as if it was being written in another language.
A not too rare affliction amongs multilingual people, I've been told.
I also have some annoying typos I keep doing over and over again, when
I'm in a hurry, in spite of that I am very well aware of that it's
incorrect. "Apart", for instance. I'm too prone to write "appart" if
I'm typing too quickly. Rather odd, really.
Many here wish to improve their English - I too wish to do so, in spite
of that I have not tried to tackle the problems in a more active manner
for the past year.
I also need to enlargen my vocabulary, and cease to botch up with the
prepositions as often as I do... We're all learners here.

83 :gaijin:2006/07/17(月) 21:02:13

k-tan's english is perfectly fine.

I was lucky, my parents didn't force any religion on me. I grew to be rather
worried when people excessively used religion. I sadly let that get in
the way of joining the scouts, too. The constant references in various stuff to "God"
creeped me out too much.
I don't have anything against people having a religion, as long as they
use it to make their life, and the world, better with compassion - not as an excuse
to act all "Holier-Than-Thou" and spew hatred on people who do not play along
with the exactly same rules.

NEET is a loser, I can understand at last,

NEET is hip and trendy now, everyone wants to be NEET

no no no! NEET is a loser. I will quit a NEET.

If you want to quit being a NEET, you have to either
commit a crime and spend a life time in jail, or commit suicide and say the world a good-bye.

Freeter ⊂ NEET

117 :gaijin:2006/07/18(火) 00:56:50
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEET

"NEET is distinct from freeter, the classification for those who
continually move between low-wage jobs."

NEETs consists of freeters and hikkies

When we define a word of NEET, which is more suitable for NEET, a splendid winner or a lazy loser?

NEET is a amibivalent, half is a winner and the rest is a underdog.

Be very, very careful. There are bandits on some of the roads.
Also, if you're renting a car, it's unlikely they'll let you take
it out of the country it's from. See also http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_970.html
for the requirements for driving into Mexico.

You don't want to have a cozy relationship here, ケイラ.
The rule is written in the 2ch guideline. People get mad

The problem is, bernerdo and you are already good friends and still
you two raid threads. That's why people started to think why you need
to talk to each other here. Why do they want to be here? Don't push your
luck! That's what people think. So I recommend to you to go to the board

Oh. You don't know how to play it? Well...

First of all, there are men and there are kings.

× ×
 ●
Men can move one space diagonally towards your opponent's side of
the board each turn. That is, unless a capture is possible.

× ×
 ○ ○
  ●
If one of your opponent's pieces is in the way, you can jump over
it and capture it.

    ×

If it is possible to make a capture, you must. Moving to the space
marked # is an illegal move.

You can also do multiple captures in one turn, in situations
such as this. First you jump to @, and then to ×.
If you jump the first piece in the sequence, you must follow
through and jump the rest as well, of course.

Now for kings... You get them by reaching the kings row of your
opponent.

×○×○×○×○ <- kings row
○×○×○×○×
×○×○×○×○
××××××××
××××××××
●×●×●×●×
×●×●×●×●
●×●×●×●× <- kings row

◎ could be a white king, and ◆ could be a black king, or something.
Anyway, kings can move both forwards and backwards, unlike men,
who can only move forwards.

The objective is to capture all of your opponent's pieces.

Couse my office concerns to managements of exposition overseas,
Unfortunately there was no ppl who can speak English fluently.
I had been thinking that I can speak English a little, but
that was just a fake confidence.

>>387
"Couse"→"because" or "'cause" or "cuz" colloquially

"concerns to managements of exposition": I don't understand this.

"there was no ppl who can speak"
→"there weren't any people who could speak"

"had been thinking that I can speak"
→"had been thinking that I COULD speak"

"fake confidence"→"false confidence"

Hi! Kayla-chan!

Here you are

http://life7.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/intro/1148136075/101-200

Let's go to this Nareai thread!
once two members get too close, we have to go to ths thread!! lol
see you there!^^

>>393
You're welcome.
"revise"→"revision"
"What I wanted to mension is"→"What I wanted to say was"
The reason that "say" is better than "mention" in this case is
that if you say "what I wanted to mention" was, it makes it sound
like you forgot to mention something rather than that you want to
correct something that you tried to say.

"related to arrange"→"related to arranging"

"international conference"→"international conferences"

"Hope it would be given up soonly": I'm sorry to say it, but I don't
know what you mean by this, either... Are you trying to say you
hope that you give up soon? In your sentence, it should be "soon"
instead of "soonly", by the way.

Anyway, now I get what you meant in your last post.

"Couse my office concerns to managements of exposition overseas"
→"Because my office deals with managing expositions overseas"
or "Because my office is concerned with managing expositions overseas".

I made a punctuation mistake.
「if you say "what I wanted to mention" was,」
→「if you say "what I wanted to mention was",」

I think it's a bad system here. The anonymity, that is. You can't tell how many people
are really saying something, because it could be a bunch of different people,
or the same one over and over.

umm...good and bad. You can be very irresponsible and say whatever

444 :k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2006/07/18(火) 21:59:05
>>443
Isn't the rule more of about that one should not have a lengthy personal conversation
with just one person in public when there are plenty of other people
who wish to talk too? That makes slightly more sense to me, though
I can't say I've heard of this rule before, in spite of several people
having long personal conversations here on numerous occasions, so I'm
a bit confused... Perhaps it's because those people were not regulars?

>>444
Yeah, that's right. If one wish to have a conversation with one
particular person, they can just talk on msn. So the others just can suggest
them that words. But instead, this issue dragged for hours.

So gaijin and other ppl have left?

I'm kind of used to this system but still I always don't know
on how many ppl am I talking to... haha

An ellipse is something in math.
x²/a² + y²/b² = 1
where a is the length of half the major axis
and b is the length of half the minor axis

You mean an ellipsis, which is "dot dot dot" (…).

Hm, When I was in Japanese class, it was weird when I was learning, because there is no plural!
because friend and friends are both tomodachi.
It must be so hard for japanese people to learn plural. >_<

but it depends on situations.
sperm means 精子 in japanese.
but we don't use 精子達 usually.精子達 sounds very odd.
it's ok to use 精子 in any situation.we don't grasp
a sperm one by one.if we say 100 sperms in japanese,
that'll be 100(個)の精子.no plural form.

english is more strict whether to use plural forms or not.

Random fun facts (from wikipedia):
>Fair hair is a stereotypical characteristic of the people of Northern Europe,
>particularly in Scandinavia and the other Nordic countries and for this
>reason very pale hair is often referred to as Nordic blond. While blond hair
>is more common in Scandinavia and Finland than in other countries, the true
>amounts and degree to which hair in this region is blonde has, however, been
>obfuscated by the percentage of people bleaching their hair. Sweden, the
>largest and most populous of the Nordic countries, for example, has the
>highest percentage of both males and females who make use of hydrogen
>peroxide and related chemicals to change their natural hair color to that of
>'Nordic Blonde'. The range of common hair colours in Scandinavia ranges from
>very light to dark brown, but black and especially red are also present.
>Certain caucasians with pale complexions are able to pass as natural blonds
>because there is little contrast between their natural skin and hair colors.

Can I ask a favor of you again?

This is from the American drama, Buffy the vampire slayer.

Cordelia: "You'll go to college some day, Xander.
I just know your pizza delivery career will
take you so many exciting places."

When I hear Cordelia say "go to college" on video, "college" sounds like "co".
American people sometimes pronounce college as co? Or my ears deceive me?

Don't worry about it. They didn't speak English, did they?
4ch has the Japanese board like 2ch has the English board.
In the J-board people are encouraged to post in Japanese, while
people can't in the other threads. So I guess it is a perfect place
for you and Kayla. Actually I sometimes pay a visit there.
It's nice and quiet. Have fun talking there!

I'm a Japanese.

Not to dwell on 4-ch all the time, but I find people there very friendly
(I'm not talking about Japanese people who called themselves the Vippers).

The one and only problem is, there are fewer posters there than here.
But from my point of view you need to know a good and quiet place to talk in English
with Kayla. So I suggested you two use the board.
And I'll deffinitely come to the board when you start posting there.
Not unless you want it, though.

The phrase is frequently misquoted as "The quick brown fox jumped over

That's a bonafide Swedish accent, alright x_X;; *shudders*
I quite like the sound of the Swedish language, however a Swedish
accent in English just sounds really stupid...

926 :Born and Raised in ◆Hell/6W/Cs :2006/07/20(木) 02:51:45
I checked out all the other four samples by male Swedish
and found that they tend to pronounce the 'ch' sound as if "sh."
In fact I've noticed this tendency in many songs by Scandinavian singers.

Oh? What songs? But it is indeed one of the tendencies Swedes tend to have when
it comes to pronouciation, unless they've actually learned a more proper pronouciation
in English.

By the way, to take an example in the Swedish language...
"Shock" in swedish is spelled "chock", and pronounced something along
the line of 'shok' (short o).

929 :Born and Raised in ◆Hell/6W/Cs :2006/07/20(木) 03:04:51
I didn't think the Swedish accent in English stupid at all.
They sounded quite natural.

The first clip had the heaviest Swedish accent. The heavier the
accent is, the stupider it sounds. Might not sound as stupid
to non-natives, but it just sounds way too sloppy. But then again
one hears English all the time, so we know how it's "really"
supposed to sound. A too heavy Swedish accent sounds as lazy
and silly as if one wud liek naut bauthr ta spiik properly
an liek et duznt relly giev a gud impressun... -_______-
A too heavy accent is like "why is this person even bothering
to try to speak English when they clearly can't be arsed to?"
The five clips weren't really bad, but I've heard too many
really horrible examples of really heavy Swedish accents.

I'm not quite innocent.
I'm innocent at the same time as very much not. I'm paradoxal like that.
I've seen a lot of things, and I know a lot of things. I first became
aware of many of the horrible things in this world at a very early age.
But I prefer to see the world in a nicer light, and behave accordingly to that.
After all, there's so much beauty and good things in this world, one
may just as well be happy over those things, rather than be unhappy
at the bad things. I spent too many years as a small child being scared
and unhappy about the bad things, I do not wish to do so more.
